ISO 46001 Certification

ISO 46001 Certification – Water Efficiency Management System (WEMS)

What is ISO 46001?

ISO 46001 is the international standard for Water Efficiency Management Systems (WEMS). It provides a structured framework for organizations to manage water use, reduce consumption, identify efficiency opportunities, and implement sustainable water practices.
This standard is applicable to industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, utilities, and public organizations.

WEMS2

1. Significant Reduction in Water Consumption

Through monitoring, measurement, and controlled processes, organizations can reduce unnecessary water use and save operational costs.

2. Lower Operational and Utility Costs

Improved water efficiency directly reduces water bills, wastewater charges, and related maintenance costs.

3. Enhanced Environmental Performance

Certification demonstrates commitment to sustainable development, resource efficiency, and corporate environmental responsibility.

4. Compliance With Regulatory Requirements

ISO 46001 helps organizations meet local and international regulations related to water usage, conservation, and wastewater management.

5. Improved Risk Management

The standard requires identification of water-related risks such as shortages, interruptions, leaks, and operational impacts—enabling proactive controls.

6. Strengthened Corporate Reputation

Customers, investors, and stakeholders increasingly value companies with certified sustainability practices.

7. Proven Framework for Continuous Improvement

ISO 46001 promotes ongoing monitoring and optimization, ensuring long-term efficiency and performance improvements.

ATC International delivers the full certification cycle in accordance with ISO/IEC 17021-1.

1. Application & Quotation

  • The organization submits the application form.
  • ATC reviews the scope, complexity, and applicable processes.
  • A formal quotation and certification plan are issued.

2. Contract & Audit Planning

  • Agreement is finalized.
  • Audit team is assigned based on competence requirements.
  • The audit program for Stage 1, Stage 2, Surveillance, and Recertification is prepared.

3. Stage 1 Audit – Readiness Review

During Stage 1, auditors evaluate:

  • Scope of the Water Efficiency Management System
  • Water use profile and baseline
  • Documentation and procedures
  • Identification of water efficiency objectives
  • Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Preparedness for Stage 2

A Stage 1 report is issued outlining any areas needing improvement.

4. Stage 2 Audit – Full System Implementation

In this stage, ATC auditors assess:

  • Actual implementation of water efficiency controls
  • Monitoring, measurement, and metering programs
  • Action plans to reduce water consumption
  • Operational planning and controls, Design and Procurment
  • Competence and awareness of staff
  • Internal audit and management review effectiveness
  • Achievement of water efficiency objectives

Successful completion leads to certification approval.

5. Certification Decision & Issuance

After the audit:

  • The file undergoes an independent technical review.
  • If compliant, the ISO 46001 Certificate is issued.
  • The certificate is valid for 3 years, subject to ongoing surveillance.

6. Surveillance Audits (Year 1 & Year 2)

These audits ensure the system is continuously maintained.
Auditors review:

  • Updated water use data
  • Monitoring and metering results
  • Improvement programs
  • Corrective actions
  • Operational changes
  • Compliance with regulations

7. Recertification Audit (Year 3)

At the end of the 3-year cycle:

  • A full system reassessment is conducted
  • Effectiveness, improvements, and long-term performance are evaluated
  • A new certificate is issued for another 3-year cycle

  • UK-based certification body with global operations
  • Experienced auditors in water efficiency and sustainability
  • Fast, efficient, and transparent certification process
  • Support across UK, Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa
