ISO 14067 Product Carbon Footprint Verification Services
Overview: Independent Product Carbon Footprint Verification
Product-level greenhouse gas information is increasingly used by customers, supply chains, regulators, and other stakeholders. Independent verification provides confidence that reported product carbon footprint information has been determined and reported in accordance with defined criteria.
ATC International Group Ltd provides independent and impartial verification services for Product Carbon Footprint (CFP) information in accordance with applicable requirements of ISO 14067 and relevant verification criteria. ATC evaluates submitted CFP information and supporting evidence objectively and does not perform consultancy or prepare the client’s CFP study as part of the verification engagement.
What Is ISO 14067:2018?
ISO 14067:2018 specifies principles, requirements and guidelines for the quantification and reporting of the carbon footprint of a product (CFP), including goods and services. It is based on life cycle assessment principles and the applicable provisions of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. A product carbon footprint represents greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with a product system, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e), within the defined system boundary and according to applicable methodological requirements.
What Does ISO 14067 Cover?
- Product Carbon Footprint (CFP): quantification of relevant greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with a defined product system.
- Partial CFP: quantification covering a defined part of the product life cycle, where applicable.
- Life-cycle information: relevant processes, emissions and removals within the defined system boundary.
- Methodological requirements: data quality, system boundaries, allocation procedures, cut-off criteria, assumptions and calculation methods, as applicable.
- Reporting and communication: requirements applicable to the CFP study report and reporting of the quantified result.
Benefits of Independent ISO 14067 Verification
1. Increased Confidence in CFP Information
Independent verification provides objective evidence regarding the reliability and conformity of reported CFP information against defined verification criteria.
2. Supply Chain Transparency
Verified product carbon footprint information can provide relevant customers and supply-chain stakeholders with greater confidence in reported data, subject to their specific requirements.
3. Support for Environmental Reporting and Claims
A Verification Statement can provide independent evidence for relevant uses of verified CFP information, provided that resulting environmental claims comply with applicable requirements.
4. Identification of Verification Findings
Verification activities may identify errors, omissions, inconsistencies, unsupported assumptions, data gaps, or other findings relevant to the verification criteria.
5. Evidence for Stakeholder Requirements
Where customers, programmes, or other stakeholders request independently verified product carbon footprint information, a Verification Statement can provide relevant objective evidence within the defined scope.
ATC International ISO 14067 Verification Service
Independent Product Carbon Footprint Verification
ATC independently evaluates the client’s CFP study, reported results, methodologies, data, calculations, assumptions, and supporting evidence against the applicable verification criteria.
- Verification scope: defined product, reporting period, system boundary, intended use, criteria, and verification objectives.
- Evidence evaluation: review of relevant documents, records, data, calculations, assumptions, and supporting evidence.
- Verification activities: where applicable, interviews, sampling, analytical procedures, data tracing, site activities, and remote or on-site assessment.
- Independent review: an independent review is completed before issuance of the Verification Statement in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Verification Statement: issued where the verification conclusion supports issuance following completion of the applicable verification process.
Life-Cycle Approaches and System Boundaries
The applicable life-cycle stages and system boundary are defined for the CFP study and verification engagement. Examples include:
- Cradle-to-Gate: from relevant raw material acquisition through the defined production stage or factory gate.
- Cradle-to-Grave: the product life cycle through the defined use and end-of-life stages.
- Gate-to-Gate: a defined production or processing stage within the product system.
The applicable boundary is determined by the CFP study and relevant requirements and criteria. ATC does not select or design the client’s methodology as a consultancy service.
