ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026 Transition Guide

What You Need to Know About the New Editions

The new editions of ISO 9001:2026 – Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2026 – Environmental Management Systems have now been published.

Both standards build on the established management system frameworks while introducing updated requirements, clarifications and changes intended to improve their relevance, usability and alignment with the way organisations operate today.

For organisations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 14001:2015, the transition provides an opportunity to review their existing management systems, understand the revised requirements and implement any necessary changes before the end of the applicable transition period.

  • Ensure relevant personnel understand the changes.
  • Implement and evaluate the required changes.
  • Plan the transition with their Certification Body.

The objective is to ensure that the management system remains effective while addressing the requirements of the revised standard.

ATC International’s transition arrangements require new and initial ISO 14001 certification to be against ISO 14001:2026 from 31 October 2027.

How to Prepare for the Transition

1. Understand the Changes

Start by reviewing the new edition and identifying the requirements that have changed or been clarified.

Consider how the revised requirements relate to your organisation’s existing processes and management system.

2. Perform a Gap Analysis

Conduct a gap analysis between your current management system and the applicable requirements of the new edition.

The assessment should identify:

  • Requirements that are already adequately addressed.
  • Requirements that require modification.
  • New or clarified requirements requiring action.
  • Processes or documented information that may need to be updated.

The findings should be specific and supported by objective evidence.

3. Update Your Management System

Based on the results of the gap analysis, determine what changes are necessary.

This may include updates to:

  • Processes and procedures
  • Policies and objectives
  • Risk and opportunity arrangements
  • Environmental aspects and related controls
  • Documented information
  • Monitoring and measurement arrangements
  • Management review inputs and outputs
  • Roles and responsibilities

Changes should be implemented and evaluated for effectiveness.

4. Communicate and Train Your Personnel

Relevant personnel should understand the changes introduced by the new edition and how those changes affect their responsibilities.

Training and awareness should be appropriate to the organisation’s activities and the roles of personnel involved in the management system.

5. Review Implementation

After implementing the required changes, organisations should verify that the revised arrangements are effectively implemented.

Internal audits and management review can be used to evaluate whether the changes have been effectively incorporated into the management system.

6. Plan Your Transition

Organisations holding existing certification should plan their transition with their Certification Body sufficiently in advance of the applicable deadline.

This allows adequate time to complete the necessary preparation, implementation and assessment activities.

What Happens During Transition?

The transition assessment focuses on the applicable changes introduced by the revised standard and how these requirements have been addressed within the organisation’s management system.

The organisation will need to provide appropriate objective evidence demonstrating the implementation of applicable revised requirements.

The assessment will consider the organisation’s individual circumstances and the changes relevant to its management system.

The transition process is intended to verify that the revised requirements have been effectively addressed rather than requiring organisations to make unnecessary changes to established processes.
