EN 15048-1 Certification

EN 15048-1 Certification

EN 15048-1 Standard specifies the general requirements for bolting assemblies for nonpreloaded structural bolting. The EN 15048-1 standard is a guide developed to ensure the safety, durability, and efficiency of the fastening elements used during the assembly of steel structures. This standard aims to ensure the correct selection and application of fastening elements and technical solutions used in assembly processes, particularly for steel structures. EN 15048 consists of the following parts, under the general title Non-preloaded structural bolting assemblies: — Part 1: General requirements; — Part 2: Fitness for purpose. EN 15048   The 15048-1 standard covers bolts (a term used collectively for half-pitch bolts, screws, studs, and stud bolts) and carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, or aluminum or aluminum alloys with the following property classes. The relevant property classes are as follows:
  • bolts made of carbon steel or alloy steel: 4.6, 4.8, 5.6, 5.8, 6.8, 8.8, 10.9 (in accordance with
EN ISO 898-1);
  • nuts made of carbon steel or alloy steel: 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 (in accordance with EN ISO 898-2);
  • bolts made of austenitic stainless steel: 50, 70, 80 (in accordance with EN ISO 3506-1);
  • nuts made of austenitic stainless steel: 50, 70, 80 (in accordance with EN ISO 3506-2);
  • bolts made of aluminium or aluminium alloy: AL1 to AL6 (in accordance with EN 28839);
  • nuts made of aluminium or aluminium alloy: AL1 to AL6 (in accordance with EN 28839).
  This European Standard applies to bolting assemblies with ISO metric coarse pitch thread from sizes M12 to M39 for use in steel structures according to EN 1090-2, and from M5 to M39 for use in aluminium or aluminium alloy structures according to EN 1090-3.

Purpose of the EN 15048-1 Standard

This standard defines the technical requirements for fastening elements. It particularly covers the mechanical properties and manufacturing processes designed for cold-formed steel fastening elements. It plays a critical role in the construction of safe and durable structures.

Content of the Standard

This standard includes various criteria regarding the design, production, and quality of fastening elements. The main sections of the standard are as follows: Identification of Fastening Elements: The mechanical properties and areas of use of cold-formed steel fastening elements are defined in detail. Mechanical Properties: Important mechanical properties such as durability, tensile strength, and yield strength of the fastening elements are defined. Manufacturing Processes and Controls: The quality of materials used in the production of fastening elements, production methods, and quality control processes are specified. Areas of Application: The standard explains how fastening elements should be used in the assembly of structures and different construction projects, and under which conditions they are suitable.

Factory Production Control System (FPC System)

The manufacturer must establish and continuously apply a Factory Production Control (FPC) System in accordance with the TS EN 15048-1 standard. This system ensures that the products undergo quality control at every stage. The FPC system should include procedures, regular inspections, tests, and/or evaluations, and the use of these results to control raw materials and other incoming materials, components, equipment, production processes, and products. All elements, requirements, and provisions accepted by the manufacturer must be systematically documented in the form of written policies and procedures. It is a system that integrates all necessary measures to maintain and control compliance with the operational techniques and fundamental characteristics of the declared product performance. Test reports must be kept by the manufacturer for at least 10 years from the final production date of the related structural bolt connections. Acceptance criteria for incoming raw materials must be documented. All test equipment must be calibrated according to documented procedures, frequencies and criteria. Personnel performing work affecting the performance of the product must be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills and experience, and records must be kept. There must be written procedures specifying how to handle non-compliant products. Non-compliant products should be recorded, and when a product does not meet the acceptance criteria, corrective actions should be immediately implemented. Non-compliant products or batches should be isolated and appropriately identified. After the error is corrected, the relevant test or verification should be repeated. Control and test results should be properly recorded. Product description, production date, test method, test results, and acceptance criteria must be recorded under the signature of the person responsible for control/testing. The manufacturer must have documented procedures for corrective actions to prevent recurring errors and eliminate the cause of nonconformities. There must be procedures for determining product handling methods and providing appropriate storage areas to prevent damage or deterioration. Structural bolted connections without preloading are at the conformity assessment level of AVCP System 2+ under the Construction Products Regulation (305/2011/EU) for CE marking. The example of the CE mark and label for products under the scope of AVCP (PDDD) System 2+ is as follows: CE Mark AVCP 2++ The assignment of tasks for non-preloaded structural bolting connections under AVCP System 2+ is as follows.
