EN 14023 Certification

EN 14023 Certification

EN 14023 is a standard that defines the quality and performance specifications for polymer-modified bitumens. This standard covers the general principles for determining the properties and relevant test methods of polymer-modified bitumens suitable for use in the construction and maintenance of roads, airports, and other paved areas.

According to this standard, polymer-modified bitumens are types of bitumen used to enhance the durability of asphalt. Polymers are added to the bitumen structure, significantly improving its resistance to temperature fluctuations and traffic loads. As a result, roads become longer-lasting and safer.

Why is Polymer-Modified Bitumen Preferred?

Polymer-modified bitumens offer many advantages over conventional bitumens. Bitumens produced in accordance with the EN 14023 standard perform exceptionally well, especially in harsh climate conditions, handling both high temperatures and cold. These products make asphalt more durable and prevent problems such as cracking, deformation and abrasion. At the same time, the elasticity of the bitumen increases thanks to polymer modifications, which makes the road surface more flexible. Bitumen quality, polymer suitability, mill performance and mixing and resting of the final product in tanks are important for polymer modified bitumen.

Properties of Polymer-Modified Bitumens According to EN 14023 Standard

The key properties related to the production and use of polymer-modified bitumens are as follows:

1.High Temperature Resistance: Polymer modified bitumens are resistant to high temperatures. Asphalt is prevented from melting and deforming, which ensures that roads remain solid for a longer period of time.

2.Flexibility at Low Temperature: Cracking of asphalt is prevented in cold weather conditions. Polymer modified bitumen maintains its flexibility even at low temperatures.

3.Resistance to High Traffic Loads: Polymer modified bitumens are more resistant to heavy vehicle traffic. In this way, they offer long-lasting solutions on highways, city roads and bridges.

4.Abrasion Resistance: These bitumens are more resistant to surface abrasions and ensure that asphalt surfaces remain solid for a longer period of time.

5.Environmentally Friendly (Eco-Friendly) : Polymer modified bitumens complying with this standard are produced with environmentally friendly materials. This is a significant advantage for sustainable infrastructure projects.

Polymer modified bitumens are widely used in various road construction and maintenance projects. There are application areas such as Highways and Highways, Bridges and Crossings, Airport Runways, Urban Roads and Parking Areas.

The tests defined by the standard are as follows:

Test samples should be taken as described in EN 58 standard. Test samples should be taken from laboratory samples and prepared for testing as described in EN 12594.

  • EN 1426 – Penetration Test
  • EN 1427 – Softening Point
  • EN 12607-1 – Hardening Resistance
  • EN 12593 – Fraass Breaking Point
  • EN ISO 2592 – Flash Point
  • EN 13589 – Determination of the tensile properties of modified bitumen by the force
  • ductility method
  • EN 13588 – Determination of cohesion of bituminous binders with pendulum test
  • EN 13587 – Determination of tensile properties by tensile test method
  • EN 13398 – Determination of elastic recovery of modified bitumen

Factory Production Control System

The manufacturer must establish a Factory Production Control System (FPC System) in accordance with the EN 14023 standard and must continuously implement this system. This system ensures that the products undergo quality control at every stage.

The FPC system shall include procedures, regular inspections and tests and/or evaluations, and the use of these results to control raw materials and other incoming materials, as well as components, equipment, the production process and the product. All elements, requirements and provisions accepted by the manufacturer shall be systematically documented in the form of written policies and procedures. Acceptance criteria for all incoming main materials shall be documented. Calibrations of all test equipment shall be carried out according to documented procedures, frequencies and criteria. The manufacturer shall establish procedures to ensure that the values of all characteristics related to product testing are maintained. There shall be documented procedures for non-conforming products, traceability and marking, corrective actions, transportation, storage and packaging controls. It shall meet the requirements specified in the ISO 9001 standard.
